  • Cricket is a game in which the opposition must not be under estimated, but rather highly respected

  • Too often players reach what they consider is good enough and don’t strive to go beyond, you must push yourself to do better.
  • Be an example to your team mates.
  • When the going gets tough and all seems lost strive for that SECOND EFFORT, you will be surprised at the results

Analysis of a poor team!

Be aware of the traps so many teams fall into, where lack of commitment and purpose destroys all the good efforts, below are listed typical symptoms of a poor team.

THE GAME

 

You are expected on the ground 1 hr before play, in correct attire, 1 lap of oval and light stretch.

The joker in the dressing room is usually the guy who fears failure. So he hides behind his mouth and antics.

There is one captain at all times.

The player that assumed the role of motivator or strategist is only expressing his own short comings. They usually speak in “WE  MUST”  “WE SHOULD” never do they speak “I must”

The game is played in sessions, be aware of the rhythm of play. THINK

Sledging, is  a reflection on all the team members and the club, and only serves to wreck the yours and team goals

 

Try to spend time with the opposition after the match.

Remember you represent the club & its sponsors as well as your family.

 

Watch the game as much as you can.

 

EXPERIENCE

If you lack experience , you must create it in your mind, this is called SYNTHETIC EXPERIENCE

Visualize your rhythm bowling, or batting etc

Always be prepared, program yourself, don’t sit in a closet, in the dark, just hoping that things go your way.

This type of player is called a “HOPE” player and one without commitment.

 

If you as a bowler are getting slogged, stop get your bearings  and adjust.

Replay instantly the ball in your mind was it a good ball or bad – analyze and adjust.

If you have made a mistake – there is a reason. Figure it out and fix it.

Batting is the same principal.

Try to get the opponent off his rhythm, and then you will be in control. The mark of a good player is the fact he can adjust in the heat of combat.

Some players are great when there is no pressure, but fall badly when it matters. These guys are FRONT  RUNNERS . You cannot rely on them. They promise a lot and give little.

 

Visualize yourself being successful, it will give you confidence and relaxes you. A player must admit at times that he was wrong. Admit it and change, being stubborn is an ego thing.

PRESSURE IS REALY A FEAR OF FAILURE   Once again visualize what you need to change the greatest mistake is the fear of making a mistake.

Mentally tough athletes dictate the game circumstances.

 

VISUALIZATION  is  the most over used term , and the most under used skill.

Visualization is a self directed imaging, designed to show the  body what you want it to happen. 20% of the fibers in the eyes retina lead directly to the motor cortex of the brain

 

 

 

 

 

 

MENTAL TOUGHNESS

 

We all have off days and will have them again. Consider the down times as putting you mind into a charger like we recharge a battery.  It is important not to allow yourself to have self pity – why me!

 

Remember the front runners the guys who does it when it’s easy and drops the ball when it tough

Never give in – Defeat is a lesson to be learnt and only a measure of your ability application at the time.

 

Mental Toughness is

ü  BEINGING COMMAND  [CHANGE IF YOU ARE NOT]

ü  ABLE TO ADJUST [ DON’T BE STUBBORN]

ü  REPLAY [GET THE FEEL OF GREATNESS]

ü  VISUALISE

Intense DESIRE is the key.

 

When you visualize a task remember to do it in detail and vividly.

 

Shadow batting – bowling – catching helps program reactions.

 

In fielding a good player does not get surprised. He expects every delivery to come to him, so be prepared.

The batsmen is trying to surprise you surprise him.

Muscle memory is programming of the sub-conscious.

It’s a reflex action

If you spend too much time thing then it becomes conscious and usually too late

 

Set Goals, consciously and make them happen sub-consciously

‘If you think long enough, no doubt negative thoughts may flood in.

Those who cannot adjust in the heat of combat are doomed to fail.

A successful player looks and acts mentally tough. So what wrong with acting that way.

Intimidation in the game is a weapon, however after much thought it is a poor weapon when you consider your opponent is already scared of failure. So far better to be mentally tough and use the conditions and exploit every angle, after all it’s about who cracks first?

 

How much you devote to cricket is important. However to be at your best a balance has to be made in your life, friends, family work and recreation.

 

If you have given 100% and lost, don’t get mad or frustrated accept that on the day you were not up to it however if you only put 90% then you should feel disappointed “Greg Norman

Remember the game is meant to be fun.

 

Some years back I was asked by a player “ What do I have to do to stay in the side ?”

I reflected for a while and replied, your eyes and your ears are you best coach, compare yourself to the better players and fins what is lacking in your game , it’s how quickly you adjust, recognize the areas of strengths and weaknesses and rectify, the rest is fate.

The opposition is relentless looking for ways to put you down. Practice then takes a new meaning

 

The meaning of power and importance you have in a team is measured by how much they depend on you.

 

Power can be used to get people to react by 4 ways

ü  Coercion [ threats] this does not work in the long run

ü  Reward 9 sooner or later they want more for less]

ü  Persuasion [ will you do me a favor, this leaves you owing]

ü  Knowledge [ the more you know the more dependent people are and your power increases]

 

GENERAL POINTS

 

  1. We must not underestimate our opponents – but it’s a great fault if we overestimate their ability
  2. If you think you are not giving of your best, its probably because you are confused. You did not know exactly what was required and expected, simplify
  3. Never look to be well like, before being well respected
  4. Learn how to work hard, sacrifice and fight for every inch all the time. Cricket plays a small part in physical involvement but the lessons are for ever
  5. Winners are the ones the game means more to.
  6. Internal problems if not dealt correctly will eventually lead to destroying the goal
  7. You should have a plan that will fit every situation, play session by session.Tomorrow’s problems are governed by the way we handle to-day’s
  8. When someone says you did your best , there is no higher praise.
  9. A man’s character is measured by the choice he makes under pressure
  10. Fear of failure is every one’s enemy, courage is your security
  11. Don’t be selfish
  12. Act professionally at all times
  13. When you start looking for shorts cuts , then find something else to do
  14. If you want something bad enough you will work all season for it
  15. How you act in adversity will be the measuring stick on how important your in the side.
  16. Pressure is on the character not the interlect
  17. The player who like the fancy stuff is doomed to make simple mistakes
  18. Winning is personal – to be a winner you must be satisfied with your own performance. Its only limited value if the team wins but you have had a shocker.

Fast Bowling Preparation

 

Preparation starts well before the day of the match!

You must be aware of your opposition and make sure that you are ready mentally and physically, with all equipment ready and in order.

 

  • Ask about your opposition where you can
  • Eat correctly the night before the match, breakfast, lunch – drinks
  • Know what field placements you want
  • Have a bowling plan
  • If you want to try something let the captain know
  • Put your good fielders in wicket taking positions
  • Good rest before the match
  • Make sure your boots are well maintained… essential
  • Keep the new ball up “ Feed the slips”……hit the seam
  • Count the runs off the over, minimize…. It’s a matter of who cracks first
  • It’s a game of mistakes… be aware of that
  • Be prepared to bowl at all times
  • You want the wicket
  • Be at the ground 1 hr before play…stretch…and warm up bowling
  • When bowling in warm up concentrate on seam upright
  • Bowl at off stump
  • Assess the batsmen is he front player or back foot
  • Look for behavioral traits that indicate he is uncomfortable
  • Visualize how you are going to get him out
  • Bowl with the mind not muscle
  • The bouncer is a short examination of the batsmens footwork   use it wisely
  • Don’t sledge, stay in the zone, preserve your energy
  • Learn to bowl for your bowler at the other end
  • Count your deliveries when bowling or in the field it helps to concentrate

 

The fast bowler is an important member of the side. They are in a way school boy bullies.

They create fear , team spirit, and change the game. They are the first to bowl and set the pattern for the game.

Cricket Coaching - General batting

As a young player emerging onto the first class arena, it soon became evident that myknowledge of the game had to improve, thus resulting in obtaining my respective coaching certificates, however always mindful that a  little knowledge can be dangerous, and so embarked on passing my experiences to those who wished to listen. I engaged  Greg Chappell to assist in the development of the Mosman Cricket Club, below is the extract from his address which I am sure you will all find fascinating and enjoyable.

Batting

There are 3 levels of concentration

* Waiting to bat

* Walking out

* Taking strike

Waiting to Bat

This is when you are in the dressing room or just watching the game, you do not have full on concentration but are aware of the happenings in the middle, some players will talk a lot, as did Greg, others like Mark Waugh go through a sleepy state. It is wise not to go into total concentration.

Walking out

This next state is one of arousal, a sense of tension you are now on stand by.

Taking Strike

Watch the bowlers face as he comes in to bowl then focus on the ball, look for the stitches on the ball, this is called fine focusing.

Do not have nothing in your head negative thoughts flood in talk to your self  look for every opportunity to come forward. Do not have your weight on the heels , a key point here is, and, can signal the switch for full concentration is, tilt the top had towards the bowler, this set the wrist and allows a full straight  back lift and face of the bat maintaining the figure 9.

It is difficult to concentrate full on all day get in the habit to switch on and off between ball relax think about other positive things, Doug Walters counted the crowd.

Target how many runs you want to score in the season 800 and concentrate to get them 1 at a time. Count every run this will help your concentration.

What are you trying to achieve ?

Count one at a time !

How will you get it ?

Concentrate on each ball !

Don’t try to get the end goal first !

Mental preparation started long before the day of the match visualize the event see yourself achieving the goal, replay how you intend to play, see yourself playing the stroke. Reinforce those values you want to improve on.

 

Most players will only improve physically 10-15% but mentally in excess of 50% , and it starts at the practice sessions.

Use practice sessions wisely you can over practice, better to have 2  15min quality sessions, re-enforce the game plan, talk to yourself , do not get out, play strokes according to the type of ball , try to work the v”s simulate match conditions. You should be upset if you get out in the nets.

There are times when you are batting and this little voice say’s go over the top and you wrestle with this until you snap and do it, talk to yourself “all right you got that out of your system, what did you prove, get you head down and work at it “

 

Cricket careers are  like a siv, a box with layers of mesh each layer with smaller holes , you going through that siv it is like being tested at each level, pretty soon all those that reach the top have something in common. Pressure also can play a restrictive role you can start off with the dream and lose sight of the goal, a strand of cotton is easily broken wind it around a number of times and becomes very tight, so are our careers, each little bit of pressure is a another strand, ultimately choking the talent. Mental toughness is earned, not given.

 

Fielding

 At practice look to take about 6 good slips catches any more is over doing it the chances are that bad habits will enter your mind

Catching is about concentration same as in batting switch on , switch off.

Watch the feet of the batsmen it is the tell tale movements which will indicate the direction the ball will be struch.

Make sure to be moving early , be moving before e the ball is hit.

First slip watch the ball, 2-3 watch the hips of the batsmen.

If you do not enjoy fielding get another job.

Avoid useless chatter  eg “lets have him” clapping of hands etc.

 

Captaincy

This is about common sense, which of  you bowlers would you least like to face , place fielders where they are best suited, every one should do 10-15 of full on fielding practice at each session.

Work out how many runs you want to keep the opposition to in that session eg  if  85 is normal for the ground let your team know you want 65 or less this puts enormous pressure on the other side to score. all fieldsmen are now aware of the common goal. The bowlers know that they have to operate to less than 3 per over, soon the batsmen have to take risks.

Do the basics right, achieve the simple things efficiently.

Give the ground a total eg 250 , enthusiasm is infectious, challenge each other in the field.

 

Bowling

Many of the attributes mentioned above apply to bowling, at practice get the technique right, mental prepare yourself in game simulation. Talk to your fieldsmen they may have picked something up or can give you valuable information, after each ball the little voice will tell you what to bowl next believe in it. Talk to yourself  visualize how to get him out , be prepared before the match , get the line and length and game plan clear in your mind, Sir Richard Hadley would say I would remember the 3-L’s Line Length Lillee this put him into frame of mind.  Look to relax the face muscles, remember its a matter of who cracks first. Your mind will wonder if you do not talk to yourself.

 

Accept that some days you get out of bed and it is tough going and it will be hard , you just have to work at it.

The brain will recall the last thing you put into it , tell yourself what you want, “I see the ball just short going over off stump” do it with out thinking. Picture what you want

I hope that in some small way that we have been able to help mold a better attitude and in doing so your enjoyment of the game improves. Less than 450 players have represented at Test Level, you never know who’s next.
